This isn’t still in Crestfallen (palm trees) – so there’s some bending of space going on… communication (coordination?) between great centers of witchy civilization? Intrigue!
#1 Well blow my lips off! It is a witchy transporter!
#2 The lights come on ONLY when a witch is present? Very interesting! See: she’s been there a hundred times and the lights didn’t come on, eh? Now Sera’s there and Presto!
#3 Totally sound proof? Thats NOT a good thing… no help or rescue? A dangerous way to spend your first date!
#4 …to. As @Claire pointed out: “…what you get up to.” unless this sentence is continued on the next page…
I admit I had to look up exactly what a fatwah was, but I guess they are only rarely used in connection with death-sentencing and whatnot. They are more like a quasi-binding decree/ruling made by an Islamic scholar. Buuuut it could be talking about the death-part here.
when author Salman Rushdie published his book, Satanic Verses in 1988, it angered the Islamic world so much that, on valentine’s day, 1989, spiritual leader, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, proclaimed on Radio Tehran a fatwā requiring Rushdie’s execution. a bounty ($3.3 million) was placed on Rushdie’s head, and he fled to Britain. in true politco-speak, the government of Iran later said that they would “neither support nor hinder assassination operations on Rushdie.” in 1998.
since the issuing of the fatwā, there have been many assasination attempts on Rushdie’s life — as recent as this year. in 2007, Rushdie was knighted by Queen Elizabeth, which was condemmed by everyone’s favorite radical group, Al-Qaeda.
now you know why Sera’s uncomfortable with the fatwā-thingee. and knowing is half the battle. G.I. Joe!!!!
Is it bad that I can’t see this ending well? I want to be wrong, but this seems as good a place for revenge as it does for happy fun times. And Maddie has been so weird in spots.
A transport gate between distant places would be the ultimate tactical advantage. With enough of those, you could still have a community of witches without publicly having a town all of your own.
Ah, a transporter. That makes sense. Last page I thought that they were in another statue place that was hidden underground or something (they’re in a town built by witches – i think they could make a secret underground …realm… thingy if they wanted to). But a transporter woild probably be easier than copying something that already existed. Either way, i’m not sure why everyone wanted to believe this was going to be a flashback… that would not have made any sense, considering there was no setup for it,and the fact that we just had a flashback montage a few pages ago.. i tried to say that last page, but the submit button wasn’t working; ormaybe it did hours later and posted my comment up five times. I didnt check
Why it looked like a flashback? Because Califia (it’s in Africa) is where Maddy says her fingers were blown off by an IED (bomb). So, since they are currently in Crestfallen and not that Califia? It’s either a flashback or a teleporter.
The correct answer is: teleporter! lolz!
Nope, not seeing your comments on last weeks page. I see this one though!
… to?

Maybe I watch too much tv, but I’m starting to get a bad feeling about this…
“fatwah thingee”
I hate those “fatwah thingees”! Once I got one stuck in between my teeth, I had to use dental floss to dig it out…
(Thingee with two ‘e’ = lolz!)
oh wow…the next page comes in on christmas
It’ll be like a gift from Santa!
Atually, every page is like a gift from Aaron, eh?
“These walls block ALL the sound”.

*curls up and dies* *signs a petition reducing the length of a week to one hour*
In that order.
Fatwah… Fatwā? Islamic death sentence thingy? Sounds scary!

Ooh thank you! That was really interesting! Thanks for explaining it a bit more haha
Up to what – UP TO WHAT!? Damn it Alexovich stop with the will they/won’t they tension! I’m losing my mind on all sorts of levels!

I see two options of what is going to happend.
OPTION 1. Things goes completely to hell, Maddie reveals something, or tries to kill Sera. Sera has the rest of the book to solve this dilemma.
OPTION 2. Sera reach out for Maddies hand and ask:
-Do you trust me?
-What?
-Do you trust ME?
-… Yes.
They fly to the sky and starts sing about a whole new world. Sort of like this:

Ha ha, I’m imagining Sera singing that in her gravely rattlesnake voice…
This is where Maddy makes her move, for good or ill. I am hoping for good, but I expect it will be ill.
