This is reminding me of Avatar… At first, you think it’s all about the benders, and that’s fantastic, but it gets really interesting when someone says “Hey, you know, most of the people in this world don’t have superpowers.”
I’m also loving Maddy’s expressions on these past few pages. Mr A is (as ever) doing a really compelling job of showing her character and personality through her face. I find that I’m liking her a lot…
Based on Maddy’s recent schpeel, it seems like Maddy and Vicious are going to be competing for Serenity, or at least represent the two sides of the upcoming conflict to her. Just a theory
Wow, wait-a speak your mind, Maddy!
Also, I’m just itching to find out what Sera’s reaction to that little rant will be; tuesday can’t come soon enough!
Hmn. I’ve also just noticed that when Maddy’s been talking about her there, Sera’s kind of not been answering back to what she’s saying, just steering away from that topic… like when Maddy says about Vicious being strange and about her not being sure whether she’s in a dream or paying attention, instead of answering to that with an agreement or disagreement, she just steers off and talks about her not telling V her name. Hmn. Seems like Sera’s trying to defend V a little; the idolism she has for her does not seem lost yet! But it seems to be sauntering off in the wrong direction slightly…
I think Sera suspects a set-up, that’s why she wanted to know if Vicious asked her name.
Maddy seems a tad resentful in that last panel judging by her expression. Hmmm, it seems kind of bad form to rag on witches TO a witch, especially in what has so far been a friendly casual social setting.
Hmmn, now that you mention it, this does look a little setup-y. I mean, Vicious coming to crestfallen with Crawlsie, and then Maddy HAPPENS to be passing through crestfallen? A little bit too much good all at once, it would seem.
If it’s a set up I can see it being annoying but I just can’t see it as bad. If Vicious picked an assistant who’s a nice gay woman as a potential hook-up or roll model (and she might really need an assistant, what with moving far away from home AND taking on an apprentice AND being waaaay behind on recording that album [which reminds me, I’m waaaay behind on my book. Wish I could afford an assistant.]), or if she had a hand in Maddy being there, it could just be a way to quietly give Sera opportunities to grow as a person.
It was one of the reason she offered our blue-haired heroine the apprenticeship – to learn more about herself.
Not “bad” but certainly manipulative. Personally, I resent being manipulated even when the person doing it has the best of intentions. I have the suspicion Sera would feel the same way.
It feels to me that when Maddy says ‘us’ she’s including Sera. Which makes sense, having gone to high school together and all. Sera does seem like more of a regular human to me than an other-worldly witch to me. Well, as regular as goth freaks go, anyway 🙂
Yeah, that’s the point I was getting at: that Maddy seems to think of Sera as “normal,” i.e. she thinks of her as just another person, or at least not one of the flittery “disaffected daydreamers.”
I think by “us normals” Maddy means people who are down to earth and connected to day-to-day life. Sera, for all her hang-ups, went to public schools, community college, and has held an honest-to-goodness job.
Though I could be misreading things and Maddy is venting on Sera.
I was interpreting “normals” as “not witches” since the comparison she is making is between witches and everyone else. Maybe you are right, maybe she was just comparing just that particular subset of witches to everyone else, but that is not how it read to me. We’ll have to wait and see, perhaps she will elaborate.
I don’t think it is Stockholm Syndrome so much as understanding their motivations. She is speaking rhetorically. “I don;t blame them” as in “I understand where they are coming from.” Understanding someone’s actions is not the same as condoning them. Plus, it isn’t as though they targeted her specifically.
S-Syn isn’t that specific (afaik of course!) it’s any victem who identifies with or even defends those who harmed them, for no logical reason.
Being “ruled by disaffected daydreamers” sounds like… modern politics all over the world! Fully 2/3 of all politicains have a mixture of delusions of grandure & utter ignorance of reality. I’d name names, but that’d get ugly, fast 😉
No, Stockholm Syndrome is a specific psychological phenomenon that is caused by the trauma of a sustained period of intermittent abusive and/or harassing treatment. It can be from a kidnapping situation, but is also quite common in abusive relationships either familial or romantic. Maddy doesn’t seem to be displaying capture bonding here, just sympathy for the mindset that would lead a group to violently rebel against their magically enhanced leaders. A survivor of a terrorist attack can understand and sympathize with the motivations of the terrorists without condoning the actions.
i think ive said this before…but i dont think V has ever really had to struggle for anything…think about it…he parents were wealthy and well educated…from her bio it almost seems as if her music career was handed to her and came easy for her because of her powers….she could basically do whatever she wanted from the time she was a child until now…sure she had to be educated…but again she had the advantage of a private tutor…where as most of us are stuck in overcrowded classrooms…she could sit around and read and write music and do whatever all day long…while most of us may have talents and interests of our own…we still have to set them aside for part of the day in order to put food in our stomachs and roofs over our heads….whatcha think? V almost seems too good to be true….im willing to bet there is a dark underbelly to her success.
I guess Maddy has a certain dislike for the more attation seeking witches. Maybe thats why she has a sudden intrest in Sera? Perhaps even might be worried that V is bad influences on her?
Aaaactually I’m a boy xD.
I’ll give a hug (?) to the first person who tell me who my avatar is. I’ll give you a clue: It’s from a comic which I think maybe Aaron have read. He knows the author, and I really think that Mr. A might like it ^^
Chances are most of the people here are long time disciples of Mr. Vasquez, ha ha ha.
Anybody think that maybe V isn’t using Maddy to get to Sera, but Maddy might be using Sera to get to V? She does seem to express a grudge against the magical community.
An interesting theory, one I had not considered. It would certainly tie into the foreshadowing of the chapter’s title.
If she really is resentful, one has to wonder if it developed before or as a result of her world tour. The flashback scenes seem to depict her as happy to be setting out on the adventure. Maybe the blast was more emotionally damaging than she has let on.
I dunno. A big part of me hopes Sera stands up and tells Maddy off for stereotyping all witches into one disenchanted group. Sera is a witch too Maddy. You ask her to meet you just so you can lump Sera and other witches into a single convenient pile?

Yeah good point. Manipulative usually equals not good.
Some of us need it.
“Er, um.. I’m right here.”
Exactly what I was thinking. Bad mouthing a group of people when you are talking to a member of that group… yea, definitely bad form.
It feels to me that when Maddy says ‘us’ she’s including Sera. Which makes sense, having gone to high school together and all. Sera does seem like more of a regular human to me than an other-worldly witch to me. Well, as regular as goth freaks go, anyway 🙂
Except that she makes specific reference linking her use of “the rest of us” to mean “normals”.

Um, Maddy? I’d still blame the actual terrorists if I were you. Stockholm Syndrome is a brutal thing…

Buuut.. I still think this is a trap.
Run, Sera, RUUUUN! 🙁
Man! Sera NEEDS to get a magic-manicure or something. Her nails are going to tear apart =O!!
She is a nail-biter. Given her anxieties this is not surprising.
She doesn’t require manicures. If she thought about it as an issue, she could just shape change them back to being healthy.
I think that’s why she said magic-manicure. heehee.
Aaaactually I’m a boy xD.

that is Devi from I Feel Sick #2…she was talking to Johnny….you dont have to hug me…
Whoa. That was fast.
Yes That’s Devi.
=( I wanted to hug you xD. Just Kidding.
Poor Devi does not have best luck with relationships.

As always suuuuper amazing page! :3

I wish I was in a comic like these
