Am I the only one who is getting more and more of the impression that Maddy’s acting pretty much like, well, a 16 year old showing off to a crush or a friend? Kinda ‘Hey lookit! I know all these back doors to free absinth and secret tunnels and isn’t this fun?’
I really want to believe that Maddy’s doing the things she wanted to but blew her chance to when they where 16. I really want to believe that…
I agree it does kinda feel like that. Rather than being sinister, it seems like she is reverting a little, partly reliving childhood and partly trying to live a childhood she didn’t have. What comes off somewhat smug is that youthful pride in knowing something someone you want to impress doesn’t.
The Czech’s tunnels! So all these famous historical (?) witches collaborated to build a network of interlocking secret passages? Sorry, can’t breathe, dead from the coolness.
It does seem that there’s a lot Maddy doesn’t know about these places, never having been here with a witch before. Could be some surprises in store, for both of them — not just of the “possible sudden betrayal and/or sex” variety — to make things even more interesting…
Has it been explained, or at least shown, how they are moving from Crestfallen to Africa to eastern Europe? I get that magic is involved in these various tunnels, but I haven’t seen any transitional phases between the various locations.
Rereading, I don’t think they’re actually going anywhere besides through different parts of Crestfallen. Crestfallen has another one of the 121 towers of Califia (Maddy mentions she’s been to the ones in “Morocco, Alexandria, Kano, Accra, Djenne-Djenno… ours”), which would be where the secret passage led to.
Here, I’m assuming “The Czech” is another/some of the Crestfallen witches.
Seems legit…
I wonder where are they going…?
Towards that glowing spot, just around the corner there…
(Captain Obvious strikes again! lolz!)
I’ll bet the farm it’s a really COOL place! I wonder how they managed to find it the first time?
The same way many other cool places are found: By accident. Likely she got lost while exploring and stumbled across it.
Either that, or lots of research.
A map, perhaps.

Ahhh I wish I could read the walls!
possibly see the word “bone” but probably not. I love little things like that in the backgrounds of comics/games/art.

Yeah, you can see Crestfallen’s tower in the background here: http://www.heartshapedskull.com/2012/07/10/break-your-stupid-heart-page-041/ I know a couple other people were confused, too, though, so maybe I’ll add a panel or some dialogue to the book version.
Thanks, I see it now. I think I was initially thrown off by the guy buying the scimitar at the kiosk.
I like Maddy’s face on panel 3: someone who’s just had it dawn on them that she is indeed playing with sweaty dynamite…
